Intermittent Fasting: What is it?


I get this question more and more, as Intermittent Fasting (IF) has become mainstream.  Although the idea may seem new to many out there, it has been used as one method to 'get lean' for years.

The word ‘fasting’ strikes fear into most people, but essentially with IF, all you are doing is taking a break from eating (like sleeping), and you will resume after a period of time.  It should be noted that you will not perish.

It’s a pattern of eating that alternates between periods of fasting (usually meaning consumption of water and sometimes low-calorie drinks such as black coffee) and non-fasting. There are a few different methods, and Precision Nutrition's Experiments with IF go through the most popular ones.

After reading the experiments (a very quick read), I decided to try it for myself.  Quite honestly, I found it fairly quite easy to fit in 1-2 days of fasting per week.  I kept busy on my fasting days, and ate sensibly after the fast was over.  My results were positive; I lost a couple of kilos in one month, without feeling like I wasted away muscle.  But as the authors stated, IF may not be for everyone, and you should be well-informed before making decisions about changing your eating habits.
